It is official, network President of CW, Mark Pedowitz, said that a Friday the 13th TV series is in the works for 2016 release. The series will be written by Steve Mitchell & Craig Van Sickle, creators of the 1996 NBC series The Pretender. And this will actually be about Jason Voorhees and have nothing to do with the previous Friday the 13th series that was released. The site, Deadline said that the series is “described as a sophisticated, horror/crime thriller, the potential Friday The 13th series is about the ongoing quest of a detective’s search for his missing brother that is somehow tied to Jason Vorhees, a long thought dead serial killer who has now returned to wreak havoc in the new Crystal Lake.”
So, good news, we get a Friday the 13th series. Bad news, it’s on the CW. I guess it could be worse. Supernatural is on the CW and that’s a badass show that gives us some pretty gory scenes. It is still a bit censored, but not a whole lot. And the Friday the 13th series sounds like it is not taking a lead from the MTV show, Scream. With that show, I’m not a big fan.
I am a big fan many slasher movies and I do love the Friday the 13th films. I love the series, even the cheesiness of all the stupid scenes of people that you just know are going to die. I even love the last couple installments before the reboot. I even read the comic book series with Ash vs. Jason vs. Freddy series. I was secretly wanting Jason to win, even though I knew it was going to be a draw. I’m still waiting for a crossover between them all and Hellraiser, so that Pinhead can get involved. Did you know that there was a comic with Jason squaring off against Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre?

I think I would prefer a Friday the 13th TV series if done from a more whodunit perspective than an outright horror flick-style show. I’ve watched Scream, and it’s pretty done. The casting only has about two principle characters that I really like and feel were written well. The rest are mostly bad. The writing is half-assed and cliche, but not in that self-aware way that we expect from Scream. Frankly, I’m bored with it and want to see a clever series that pays homage to cheese-whiz horror for a chance.
