Hercules – New Ongoing Comic Book Series – An Actual Bisexual Headlining, that isn’t Constantine?

Hercules is getting his own comic book series in November from Marvel Comics. This is pretty cool being that Marvel is lacking in the bisexual male department for headliners. They exist, many are women, but we have a couple males here and there. The only problem is that Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso has stated that despite Hercules’ origins and past speculations, Hercules will not be bisexual. That seems a bit disheartening as I feel like Hercules would be the PERFECT bisexual character to be given his own title. He is literally Hercules from mythology, which all Greek heroes/gods were seemingly bisexual if you read up on them.

Let’s forget that Iolaus (who you probably remember as Hercules’ sidekick in – Hercules The Legendary Journeys) was his lover at one point. Although if you tell straight guys that liked this show about the real Iolaus, they totally freak out on you. No kidding, it happened to me when I told my friend who was a Xena/Hercules fanatic. He cursed me out and called me a liar and that I was just trying to ruin the series for him.

And we have had an alternate version of Hercules that was in a relationship with Wolverine in X-Treme X-Men. That cause huge waves among some comic book fans. Others saw it as something that would make total sense for their characters and what they had experienced together. Interesting, if their gender roles were reversed and it was two women that had become lovers, no one would care. Which has happened before when a lesbian Mary Jane Watson as Spider-Woman was introduced in Exiles. Not a single angry person was found anywhere. Hypocrisy at its best.

Northstar

And if you’re not aware, Hercules in the ‘regular’ Marvel Universe (Universe 616) has been hinted at. In fact, Marvel’s most notable gay character, Northstar, has been hinted at having a thing with the Greek god. It was probably meant more as a joke, but still it counts!

Daken

It’s unfortunate that Marvel couldn’t just allow Hercules to be a bisexual character openly. The stories could be very similar to other bisexual characters where their sexuality is not a big issue but is something that could come into play depending on their needs for the progressing of the story. Look at Daken’s (Wolverine’s bisexual son) character. He used his sexuality both ways. He used men and women to get what he wanted. Granted, his pheromones made his victims feel what he wanted them to feel, including them wanting him sexually.

Anyways, what do you think? Is Marvel playing it too safe or you think they should be taking the dive and just out Hercules as a bisexual Greek god? I have a feeling that we will still see lots of innuendos and sexual suggestions that he is in fact a bisexual man.

  1. This is really pissing me off!

Herakles was bisexual in Greek Myth. Something that was well-documented over a thousand years ago is somehow not kosher NOW!?

And seriously, a fan of Herc/Xena cussed you out for saying something that is displayed openly on a Wikipedia page? *facepalm of epic fail* I’m feeling so bad for you, bro.
