Hocus Pocus – Why Do so Many Gay Men Love it? (I’m being serious and not insulting)

Hocus

What is the big appeal to the movie Hocus Pocus? By no means am I putting it down, I enjoyed it as a child and I have rewatched it as an adult. It was very entertaining. But I do not consider it a classic movie that I watch every Halloween. In fact, I think I’ve only seen this movie two times. What I don’t understand the most is that many gay men consider this a classic movie to watch every Halloween. Where is the gayness in this movie? Or is it just a movie that coincidentally has a gay following?

Hocus Pocus 1

The reason I bring this up is because today I have seen 8 people on my Facebook feed post about Hocus Pocus and that they are excited about not only watching the original Hocus Pocus and about a potential sequel in the works but also because of a Hocus Pocus live show on Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Walt Disney World. Apparently this an actual show that was done at Walt Disney World. Which that I admit does sound cool.

Calm

But I still do not see the appeal in the movie. Maybe because I don’t get excited about Halloween as much as many of my friends do. I put on many costumes during the year for conventions and I consider Halloween more as a day to take it easy and let everyone else costume and show their talents. I usually end up watching -It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and pig out on Halloween candy that I don’t give to Trick-R-Treaters. Hey, you know that movie horror movie- Trick R Treat – is a pretty damn good movie.

Hocus Pocus 3

Anyways, I digress. Why do so many gay men love Hocus Pocus? I am legitimately asking. Again, I mean no disrespect, it is an entertaining movie. But I honestly do not see the big appeal about it. It’s definitely cute and very fun for kids. Is there something that I am missing as a gay man? Granted, I am sure not all gay men like this movie. It just seems as though a large majority do consider it a great flick that get very passionate about in their own way.

  1. Because when we’re not acting all butch and being ‘straight acting’ semi-vers/tops on Scruff, we have a lot to identify with the female lead of any drama/comedy/adventure as a fish out of water story-line. and yes Bett is a gay icon for decades. hello?

    1. That doesn’t answer anything. That means every movie she did is great, which many are really bad. Like really bad. What’s a fish out of water storyline? Someone out of their element? I think Back to the Future is one of those storylines. I don’t really consider that a gay movie though. Unless it is and it’s another one that I was unaware of being gay.

  2. Love this Movie, I think some of the reasons why it’s so highly revered is: Bette Middler, she is quite the diva and queen; early Sarah Jessica Parker is like a gay boy in drag (not a drag queen) and it’s hilarious to watch; the story is campy, cheesy and just fun; Kathy Najimy is to die for, she is awkward and a bit of an ugly duckling but still somehow is awesome, so you feel like no matter how weird you are you could still be a kick ass witch! Finally I think is all the nostalgia of it, I remember watching this and thinking “OMG Bette Middler is amazing, the way she act’s, her voice ect…I want to dress up as a witch and run around singing and be evil and look fierce!” (I did when I wasn’t pretending to be Wonder Woman or a Power Ranger) This opened me up as a young child to the world of divas and musicals. That nostalgia is fun to relive when I watch it as an adult. IDK if it’s anything like that for any one else.

  3. I think one appeal is Bette Midler. She’s been an icon of the LGBT scene for decades.

But another appeal might be just how utterly INSANE and child-unfriendly the film can be at times. It doesn’t hold back as much as most young-adult films do when it comes to the darker aspects of the holiday and life in general.

There’s a guy called Rantasmo on YouTube who did a review of it. I think he sums things up best in that video. Here’s the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FkbcBDSRxI
