Jem and the Holograms – The Art…What Are They Thinking?!

I started reading Jem and the Holograms because of the cool re-designs (shown on the first cover above on the left). Unfortunately, the image on the right is what Jem currently looks like. I hate being that kind of comic reviewer or snarky gay guy that puts down other’s art, but I can’t get past this. I started out loving the Jem and the Holograms comic, but IDW Publishing continues to change the artists and it progressively gets worse and worse. Granted, covers are generally drawn by different artists than the comic story itself, but the the idea of getting Jem looking like she did on that first cover and compared to what she looks like now is embarrassing.

Here’s Raya above. She’s the orange woman in the first panel. She looks like a female Trump or something. I know stories are important in comic books, but the art is something else that is part of the appeal. The visualization is important and hate that I can’t read the comics based on this.

Jem’s nose is so far below on her face. She doesn’t even look human. Ok, I won’t rant anymore. I know this is a minor gripe, but it’s something that’s been bugging me for months. I hear a new artist is starting up on the current story arc, so fingers crossed that it will be much better.

  1. The art on Jem bugs me too. It looks like they change artists with every new story arc. I really hate it when an artist sticks around for a story arc and then leaves. I know this “season” (I hate calling it that) of Jem is ending soon. Hopefully they get an artist that can stick around for a while.
