SHAZAM: Movie Trailer – Hmmm…What Do You Think?

This doesn’t pull me in but it doesn’t repel me either. It is still very early and I can see that they are keeping the vast majority of the plot from being spoiled in this first teaser, which is smart. I cannot tell whether or not I am convinced of Zachary Levi’s portrayal of the Big Cheese Cheese (Dr. Sivana’s phrase) is good or not. I am sure I will watch it regardless though. What do you think of this trailer?

  1. ….and my original post magically reappears just as I repost. And OH GOODY, I can’t delete it. Sigh.
    Little help, Paul?

  2. Repost, since my other one was deleted.

I think it’s just a typo, but Sivana’s nickname for Captain Marvel is “Big Red Cheese”, not “Big Cheese Cheese”. About the trailer: I had high hopes for Shazam and no hope for Aquaman. Now, it’s the reverse. The Aquaman trailer took me totally by surprise, and the Shazam trailer was …well… embarrassing. They could’ve kept all the “Gee whiz!” without making him UTTERLY a little boy. To paraphrase Superman from the Batman and Superman: Public Enemies cartoon: “Tell me, Captain Marvel, would Solomon act the way you’re acting?” But my primary objection to the trailer is Shazam’s transformation. As a child, I watched the live-action Captain Marvel. Maybe it was the gay in me, but my favorite part of the show was when he said the magic word. I mean, first you had the dramatic build up, with that suspenseful music. Then, when he said the word, there was an extended sequence of Billy Batson becoming Captain Marvel. I loved it! Only He-Man and She-ra have ever come close to matching the awesomeness of Captain Marvel’s transformation. Sadly, many cartoons (and this trailer) have totally trivialized Cap’s transformation, making it as brief and unimpressive as humanly possible, ….and I HATE it!

  4. I’m old school and not a fan of the recent Geoff Johns take on the character. I did like Millar’s Superior as a recent Shazam run, though. This probably won’t have that kind of heart. As for the trailer itself, I think it feels fun, but also strays into cheesy and forced, like a new Greatest American Hero by way of Big. So, I’m still on the fence.
