Superman The Movie – The 3 Hour Extended Cut Will FINALLY Be Released!

YES! I have been wanting this since I first discovered there were scenes cut from the 1978 Superman movie. Some scenes have been put back in for some releases, but never all of the deleted scenes. Over at Warner Brothers Archive, it has been announced that the Superman: The Movie will be getting the extended cut treatment. Their description reads:

Decades before blockbuster Extended Cuts were common, Superman proved a true “Man of Tomorrow.” Superman: The Movie received an ahead-of-its-time makeover for its television premiere – nearly 40 more minutes of story, creating a two-night television event. Audiences had already been swept off their feet by Christopher Reeve’s Last Son of Krypton, and now there was more to enjoy. Unseen in decades, this version is paired here with Richard Donner’s definitive vision of his film, the Special Edition Director’s Cut (2000), to create a supersized celebration of Metropolis’ favorite son that preserves the director’s intent while feeding superfan demands.

I had no idea that a 3 hour cut of the Superman movie even existed until a few years ago. Surprisingly my father told me that he watched Superman on February 1982, during the ABC broadcast of the movie and said that the movie included scenes that he never saw again afterwards. I honestly thought he made it up until I joined comic book forums years later who all collaborated this experience. My dad was a closeted geek, but I think if he was alive, he’d be pretty darn giddy to learn that this was finally being done.

  1. Are we talking about the Lois Lane conversation on the train, the extended underground intro to Lex scene with Superman getting tested by various death weapons, and more importantly, Superman rescuing Miss Techmacher from the crocodiles?
